b/w HP 4, varios.
Iluminación: Focos con bombillas incandescentes.

I was a student of Economics and at the age of 28 my interest in photography began. After a divorce I spent my weekends in the darkroom, printing and experimenting with toning and double toning. I have never read a book on photography and I used my intuition and learnt from my mistakes, which were many.

I bought a Bronica SQ – a middle format camera from a friend. I was interested in portraits.

I resigned from my job and sent my work to International. Photo Salons in Europe, to about 60 group shows. My first awards were in Belgium, Switzerland, and one of the biggest, Krakow Nudes P. Salon.

Artist’s statement
:

I have now been shooting nudes for 20 years. It’s a slow process. Part of the reason is that I procure my models from the street. Firstly, I normally ask them if they are interested in being photographed, and then we meet to have a coffee so that they can see my work. If all goes smoothly we discuss the styling and the limits of nakedness (which can be problematic). Sometimes they accept, sometimes the photos are good, sometimes not, it’s hard work.

I work slowly, I like to compose the lighting, in the last 2 years I have never used a flash, only normal bulbs, which provide an orange/yellow colour on film. I shoot for 2 hours, then my concentration, and that of the model slips, and so we stop. I like to shoot small stories of 2/3 photos in part because of the limited number of models. I have a specific taste so it’s hard to find good models, the biggest problem being one of an intellectual barrier.

I like to keep my scenarios simple. I concentrate on the expression of the model to capture subtle moods. For me, the whole process from first meeting on the street, to having a photo presented somewhere in the world is magical. It’s like falling in love a little. The energy put into a single photograph is amazing.

Miss Daniela Mrazkova, Czech Photo, curator of JOSEF SUDEK GALLERY wrote:
«The nakedness of his images is not the ultimate goal for Vlachy, but a means of communication, an integral part of the image, often a symbol of vulnerability. They reflect the psychological and social atmosphere of the present time – the beginning of the third millenium, with a rather confused scale of values. His images represent the artist’s reaction to today’s reality, full of unfulfilled desires, sexual obsessions and prohibitions, reproaches, aggressions and romantic nostalgia. They are neither a portrait nor a nude, as one might think at first sight, and all in all it’s nearly impossible to define them as part of one genre. They are creatively conceived as a complicated communication of thought. A very intimate communication…»
