Eric Kellerman es un británico que lleva viviendo media vida cerca de Nijmegen en los Holanda. Este profesor universitario de lingüística, saca siempre sus fotografías en su estudio, utilizando equipos digitales.
No le gusta abusar del postprocesado digital. Disfruta de un equipo habitual de colaboradoras femeninas con un un gran interés por el movimiento (danza, terapia del drama, atletismo, artes marciales). Algunas son musculosas, algunos son agraciadas, algunas pueden adoptar posiciones que parecen oponerse a las leyes de la Física.
Kellerman considera su trabajo distante, abstracto, melancólico y `anerotic’, a pesar de su temática.
Le gusta acentuar las líneas, buscar las formas geométricas, las texturas, el movimiento implícito, y sobretodo, el claroscuro. Le encanta crear ambigüedad en sus fotos, de modo que el espectador dude que parte del cuerpo está mirando. De esta manera, consigue liberar el cuerpo femenino de sus asociaciones convencionales.
Reconoce estar influenciado por el surrealismo de Dalí, Magritte y Delvaux y el pintor canadiense Alex Colville.
Recientemente ha sido reconocido con la concesión del premio Merit Award in Black and White Magazine’s Single Image de 2005. Ha exhibido sus fotografías en los Países Bajos, la Dinamarca y la Inglaterra, y sus trabajos han aparecido en libros (The Body, Feierabend, 2005) y en Black and White Magazine (USA), Focus Magazine (USA), Focus (Alemania). Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near
Nijmegen in the
Netherlands for just over half his life. When not taking photographs, he teaches linguistics at the local university. He works entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print. Digital manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes, however. He has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts). Some are muscular, some are graceful, some are able to take up positions that appear to deny the laws of physics.
Kellerman considers his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘anerotic’ despite its subject matter. He emphasises line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at. In this way, he attempts to free the female body of its conventional associations.
He has been influenced by surrealism (Dali, Magritte, Delvaux’ nudes and railway stations) and Canadian painter Alex Colville, whose occluded bodies in essentially intimate scenes can create a surprising sense of alienation. This partial view, the ‘privileged peep’, fits in with Kellerman’s particular aesthetic very well.
Kellerman recently won a Merit Award in Black and White Magazine’s Single Image competition of 2005. He has exhibited in the Netherlands, Denmark and England, and his works have appeared in books (including The Body, Feierabend, 2005) and in Black and White Magazine (USA), Focus Magazine (USA), Focus (The Netherlands) and Art-Photo-Akt (Germany). He is currently represented by Fotogalerie No. 5 (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands), Lensmodern (London, UK), and Gallery Gora (Montreal, Canada). - Some advice for whom they are beginning: If you are photographing nudes, build a portfolio as soon as possible by using partner or friends. The better your portfolio, the easier it will be to find models. Be respectful. Love light and shadow.
